Commercial Painting for Childcare Centres in Sydney: What to Expect

Painting a childcare centre isn't the same job as painting a house, and it isn't quite the same as a standard commercial fit-out either. It sits somewhere in between, with its own set of requirements.

We've worked on childcare and early-learning projects around Sydney, including a recent job for a centre in Castle Hill, and the same considerations come up on almost every one.

Low-VOC Paint Isn't Optional

Childcare centres are occupied by very young children for long hours, so the products used matter more than they would in most commercial or residential settings.

Low-VOC and low-odour paint systems are standard on the childcare work we take on, both for the finished space and for how quickly a freshly painted room can be safely reoccupied.

Durability Matters More Than Usual

Childcare interiors take a different kind of wear than a family home. Walls at child height get scuffed, wiped down and knocked constantly, and cleaning products are used far more often than in a typical house.

That changes what we recommend for the coating system, particularly around washable, scuff-resistant finishes in high-contact areas like corridors, play rooms and bathrooms.

Working Around Builders and Compliance Timelines

New childcare centres are usually delivered on a construction program with a compliance certification and opening date attached, so painting often has to slot in around other trades rather than run on its own schedule.

On the Castle Hill project, that meant coordinating closely with the builder to get walls, ceilings and joinery finished in time for fit-out and final inspection.

Existing Centres Bring a Different Challenge

Repainting an operating childcare centre is a different job again. Work is usually scheduled outside operating hours or during holiday closures, and rooms need to be fully dry, odour-free and safe before children are back in them.

Furniture, equipment and soft furnishings also need to be protected properly, since childcare rooms tend to be far more densely fitted out than an average commercial space.
