Painting Aluminium Windows in Sydney — Repaint or Replace?

Your aluminium windows still open and close, but the old colour no longer suits the house. Before ordering replacements, it is worth finding out whether the existing frames are suitable for repainting.

Painting can be a practical way to change their appearance when the windows themselves are serviceable. Replacement addresses a different brief if you need new glazing, better operation or repairs that coating cannot provide. The first step is to separate the colour problem from the condition of the window.

Should you repaint or replace the windows?

Start by describing what bothers you. If it is mainly the colour, assess the frames for a repaint. If the problem is leaks, damaged glass, worn components or poor operation, have those issues assessed before spending money on a new finish.

A paint coating does not upgrade the glazing or repair a defective window assembly. Likewise, a window does not necessarily need replacement simply because its original colour feels dated. Make the decision around the result you actually need.

For a renovation with both cosmetic and functional goals, ask for the repair or replacement scope separately from painting. You can then compare defined options rather than treating two very different jobs as interchangeable.

Can powder-coated aluminium window frames be painted?

Suitable existing powder-coated frames can be repainted, but their condition and coating compatibility must be checked first. Dulux's technical guidance identifies smooth factory coatings as a challenge for adhesion and notes that some coating types may not be suitable for recoating.

Preparation needs to address contamination, the adhesion of the old finish and the surface required by the proposed system. Where a coating is failing, applying a strong new paint over it does not fix the weak layer underneath. The recommended primer and finish should be confirmed for the assessed surface.

Bare aluminium, anodised finishes and existing paint should not automatically receive the same treatment. If you do not know the original finish, tell the painter rather than guessing from its colour.

Why we discuss spray painting and masking together

For homeowners seeking a sprayed finish, the preparation and protection are a substantial part of the job. Glass, nearby walls, floors and surrounding items need an agreed protection plan. Access can also be different on the inside and outside of the same window.

Spraying is an application method, not a substitute for a suitable coating system. Ask how the painter will prepare the frames, manage overspray and reach the agreed surfaces. A neat colour change depends on those details as well as the final coat.

If furniture, blinds or curtains restrict access, agree who will remove or move them. For exterior work, tell the painter about narrow side passages, landscaping and windows above roofs or steep ground. These details help establish a realistic scope before work begins.

Decide exactly which parts will change colour

“Paint the windows” can mean different things to different people. Does the quote cover the exterior face only, the interior face too, or accessible edges visible when a window opens? Are sliding doors, screens and surrounding trim separate?

Ask the painter to explain the boundaries during the inspection. Tracks, seals, drainage openings, locks and moving components should not be treated as ordinary decorative surfaces. Any need to remove components or arrange specialist work should be discussed before painting is booked.

This is especially useful when changing from a light colour to a dark one. An original-colour edge may be much more noticeable once the surrounding frame has changed. Confirm what can reasonably be coated and what will remain visible.

Choose the colour beside the rest of the house

Black and charcoal can give a strong contrast, but they are not the only options. Look at the frames beside the roof, gutters, brick or render, front door and interior finishes. If you are also repainting the exterior, plan the window colour as part of that scheme.

Check a sample of the proposed finish in the actual setting. Colour and sheen should both be agreed: the same colour can look different in a flatter or glossier finish. Tell the painter whether matching a retained frame is important, rather than assuming every new coating can reproduce an old finish exactly.

A real aluminium window painting project in Cowan

At our Cowan project, Sky Painting & Decorating spray-painted existing aluminium window frames using Dulux paint and repainted the exterior brickwork with Dulux Weathershield. The gallery includes masking during the work, window details and completed exterior views.

It shows how a window colour change can be coordinated with a broader exterior repaint. Your frames still need their own assessment; the product brand used on a past project is not a complete specification for another surface.

What affects an aluminium window painting quote?

Counting windows gives a starting point, but it does not define the work. A small fixed window, a large opening assembly and a sliding door can involve very different access and detail. The existing coating, required preparation and protection also matter.

Ask the quote to identify:

If you are comparing painting with replacement, obtain a separate replacement quote that explains the proposed window system and installation scope. Avoid relying on a claimed saving percentage when the two quotes cover different outcomes.

Questions before booking

Will the new paint never peel?

No coating should be described as immune to damage or ageing. Ask what preparation is included, how suitability will be checked and what workmanship warranty applies to the agreed job. Get the terms in writing rather than relying on a blanket durability claim.

Is on-site spraying the same as new powder coating?

No. Factory powder coating involves a different application and curing process. On-site repainting uses the selected liquid coating system. Ask to see a relevant completed project and discuss the finish you can expect on your existing frames.

Can the work be quoted from photographs?

Photographs help start the discussion, but the coating condition, access and detailed scope may need an inspection. Send both whole-window views and close-ups of damaged or peeling areas.
