Choosing a house painting company in Sydney starts with a practical question: can you see how this team will approach your particular home? A polished website and an attractive price are useful starting points, but the scope, preparation and communication determine what you are actually booking.
Use these eight checks when comparing house painting services. The aim is to understand the offer clearly before committing, whether you need an interior repaint, exterior painting or work on a new home.
A room repaint, an occupied two-storey exterior and a new-build facade involve different surfaces and access. Ask for relevant examples rather than judging a company by a single impressive image.
Look beyond the cover photograph. A useful portfolio explains the location, surfaces and products, and shows details or work in progress where available. Before-and-after images should show the same area from comparable viewpoints.
Our Box Hill new-build exterior project uses Taubmans All Weather and shows the facade, eaves and architectural details. Our Granville exterior repaint uses Berger Solarscreen and documents an older painted exterior, including rust preparation. They illustrate different job conditions rather than interchangeable examples.

“Prepare and paint” leaves plenty of room for different interpretations. Ask which surfaces need cleaning, removal of loose coatings, sanding, filling, priming or other treatment, and how that assessment appears in the quote.
The answer should suit the actual condition of your home. New surfaces, previously painted brickwork, stained ceilings and worn timber do not necessarily need the same preparation. Ask what happens if an unexpected repair is found once work begins.
For product-specific preparation, the selected manufacturer's current instructions matter. Dulux, for example, publishes surface-preparation guidance rather than treating the finish coat as the whole process.

“Paint the living room” may or may not include the ceiling, doors, frames, skirting, windows and built-in cabinetry. An exterior quote may include the walls but exclude the roof, guttering, fascia or metalwork.
Ask for a written list of included areas and exclusions. Where only part of the home is involved, define the boundaries. This is particularly useful for shared walls, adjoining elevations and areas where a new finish meets a retained one.
A brand name alone does not describe the specification. Ask which products are proposed for walls, ceilings, timber and other surfaces, along with the finish and the agreed coating process.
Colour selection should also be documented. If you are still deciding, clarify when samples or final selections are needed. Check colours at your own property rather than assuming that a photograph on a phone will reproduce the finished appearance.
Ask who your main contact will be and who is expected to carry out the work. Discuss start arrangements, working hours, access, security and end-of-day cleanup.
For an occupied home, mention pets, children, working from home and essential entrances. For a new build, explain the construction stage and other trades' access. A useful plan makes these practical requirements part of the conversation before the first day.
Read the wording as well as the rating. Comments about communication, preparation, care around belongings and how issues were handled can help you assess whether the service suits your priorities.
Reviews are one piece of evidence. Combine them with relevant project examples and a clear quote. Do not assume that a large photo gallery confirms every product, finish or service you need.
Ask for the business details and relevant licence and insurance information, then verify what applies to your job through the appropriate official channels. If a warranty is offered, read its scope, exclusions and claim process rather than relying on the headline alone.
Before booking, make sure the written terms address payments, variations and responsibilities. Ask how extra work will be described and agreed before it proceeds.
Put the quotes beside each other and check the same areas: surfaces, preparation, products, access, protection, cleanup and exclusions. If a detail is missing, request clarification rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
The cheapest total may describe a smaller job. A higher total may include work you do not need. The useful comparison is the price for the scope you have actually agreed.
