Timber Fence Painting in Sydney: Costs, Preparation and Quotes

A timber fence quote needs more detail than its length. Height, the number of sides, the existing finish and access along the boundary all affect the work. If you are planning fence painting in Sydney, start by deciding exactly which sections you want coated and what finish you want to see.

This guide explains the information to gather before requesting a price, with a real timber boundary fence example from our Hornsby childcare project.

What affects timber fence painting cost?

A straight, accessible fence with sound timber is a different scope from a fence partly hidden behind planting or covered in failing paint. Even two fences of the same length may need different preparation and protection.

For a useful comparison, ask each painter to identify:

  • The length and height of each fence run.
  • Whether the quote covers one side or both sides.
  • Whether posts, rails, capping, gates and exposed edges are included.
  • The condition of the timber and any existing coating.
  • The preparation, proposed product and coating schedule.
  • Access, protection of surrounding areas and cleanup.

A price per metre is only useful when those inclusions match. For example, painting one face of a paling fence is not the same scope as coating both faces, the rails and a detailed gate. We assess the fence before confirming a written project price.

Preparation depends on the fence you have

New timber and previously coated fencing need separate assessment. Tell us whether the fence is bare, painted, stained or oiled, and send close-up photographs if the previous product is unknown.

The preparation and coating system should be agreed for that surface. Loose paint, damaged timber and areas that remain damp need attention before a new finish is specified. A coat of paint will not repair a loose post or a deteriorated paling.

If repairs are needed, establish who will carry them out and what needs to happen before painting begins. This keeps the painting scope clear and avoids treating replacement timber as an unspoken extra.

One side or both sides: confirm the scope early

A boundary fence can look straightforward from your garden while access on the other side is restricted. Confirm which faces are included and what access will be available before comparing quotations.

Think about the details you will see from outdoor seating areas, the house and any adjoining walkway. Posts, rails and gates can make a noticeable difference to the finished appearance, so list them rather than relying on the phrase “paint the fence”.

Protection matters too. Identify paving, plants, windows, parked vehicles and nearby surfaces that need to be protected. If spray application is proposed, ask how those surrounding areas will be protected and whether restricted access affects the method.

A real timber fence painting project in Hornsby

At Belonging Early Learning in Hornsby, our new-build painting scope included timber boundary fencing as well as the building’s interior and exterior. We used Walpamur Fence Finish on the timber fence.

The project gallery shows the fence before coating, during painting and within the completed outdoor setting. The before-and-after comparison follows the same section beside the building from similar viewpoints, showing the change from unpainted palings to the dark finish.

This is a commercial childcare example. It shows our completed fence work; the product and preparation for another property still depend on its timber and existing finish.

Questions before booking fence painting

Can a timber fence be painted with the rest of the exterior?

Yes. Ask for the fence to be identified separately from walls, eaves, fascia and other exterior surfaces. That makes it clear which fence runs, faces and details are included in the overall painting quote.

Discuss fence painting as part of your exterior painting project

Can you quote from photographs?

Photographs and approximate measurements help us understand the initial scope. Include a wide view of each run and close-ups of damage or peeling. A site inspection may be needed to confirm access, preparation and the written price.

Is there one preparation method or coat count for every fence?

No. The timber, existing finish, condition and selected product affect the specification. Ask for the preparation and coating schedule to be set out in the quote rather than assuming every fence needs the same process.
